How do I create a simple test plan?
This lesson explains how to quickly create a new test plan in Hexawise.
First, click the "New Plan" button on the top left of your screen.
Next, follow the prompts...
1) Add a plan name
2) Depending upon where you would you like your new plan to be saved, as appropriate:
- Select an existing project from the drop down menu,
- Create a new project, or - alternatively -
- Use the default "None (private)"
3) Optionally, (if you already have a have set of test inputs created in Excel or a mind map), you could select "Choose File" to import the file.
4) Click the "Create" button.
Enter Parameters and Values
All Hexawise test plans have Parameters and Values which are entered on the Define Inputs screen for the plan:
1) Enter a Parameter.
2) Enter one or more Values for each Parameter.
3) Click on "Add" (or ctrl+enter).
4) "Rinse and repeat" until you are ready to click on the "Create Tests" button.
If you are wondering which Parameters and Values to enter into your plan, do not be discouraged; it is a little tricky for almost all new users. You might find these 3 sources of information helpful to get started:
- View some sample plans to get ideas about typical kinds of inputs that go into Hexawise
- Start with a "Verb and Noun" and then ask "newspaper reporter questions" (who, what, when, why, where, how, how many)

Also keep in mind that you usually should not include Parameters for every single field in your System Under Test. You'll need to think about how the System Under Test works to do a good job identifying a good set of test inputs for your plan. Include Parameters and Values if they should (or logically might) impact how your System Under Test operates (either by themselves or when they interact with other Values in your System Under Test). For example:
- If the system works exactly the same whether someone's name is Jim Green or Susan Smith, you may well want to leave "First Name" and "Last Name" out of your Hexawise inputs.
- If, the gender of users would impact how the system works, you would probably want to include "Gender" as a Parameter (with male and female as the accompanying Values).
Create Test Plan
Wait a few seconds for your scientifically-prioritized tests to appear.

2) Hexawise generates the smallest possible number of tests* to meet your coverage objectives.
*We are using the word "tests" fairly loosely here in this example. These are actually only sets of optimized test conditions at this point. The first set of test conditions should be executed in your first test script, and so on. You can use the other features of Hexawise (including Expected Results, Requirements, and Auto-Scripting) to transform these "bare bones" test scenarios into comprehensive, fully-stepped-out test scripts. with detailed tester instructions, Expected Results, and requirements traceability notes. These detailed test scripts can even be automatically formatted for importing into customized versions of HP QC / HP ALM that your company uses.
